Introduction: When Success Becomes a Trap

00:00:00

Lori: Welcome to the Midlife Business Academy. I’m Lori Lyons, and this is the place where we talk about building a business that actually fits your life, not the other way around. So let’s go. In the last episode, I told you about leaving a mastermind I loved, and I told you that the decision came from realizing that my dream had changed. But here’s what I didn’t say. That realization didn’t happen in a single moment, and it didn’t happen overnight. It was the result of about a year of feeling just something wasn’t quite right. It wasn’t wrong exactly. It was just off. Like wearing shoes that almost fit. You could walk in them, probably run in them, but at the end of the day, your feet hurt and you can’t quite figure out why. That’s what a misaligned business feels like.

The Hidden Cost of a Misaligned Business

00:01:53

Lori: And here’s what makes it so tricky. From the outside, everything looks fine. The business is functioning. You’re showing up, you’re serving clients, you’re posting content, you’re doing all the things, you’re hitting your numbers. Or close enough. But inside, you’re leaking energy everywhere. That low-grade exhaustion doesn’t go away after a good night’s sleep. The resentment that creeps in around the edges toward your calendar or toward certain clients, toward the offers you built that you’re now secretly dreading delivering. The feeling of always being on, always available, always one notification away from being pulled back in. That’s not burnout from working too hard. It’s the cost of building a business that doesn’t fit who you are anymore.

What Misalignment Really Looks Like

00:03:48

Lori: So let me paint you a picture. Actually, I’m going to paint you a few. There’s the coach with 17 funnels who misses dinner with her family every night. The business is generating revenue. The funnels are technically working, but she hasn’t had a meal without her phone next to her in two years. Her family misses her. Her grandkids miss her. Her kids want her to be more involved in their lives. There’s the consultant making really good money, genuinely good money, but she’s trapped in back-to-back Zoom calls from eight in the morning until six at night. She’s built a business to have freedom, and somehow she ended up with less of it than had she been working for somebody else.

Complexity Is Draining Your Energy

00:05:07

Lori: So do any of these sound familiar? Here’s the one that hit closest to home for me. I built complexity because somewhere along the way I started equating complexity with being a legitimate business. More offers, more systems, more moving parts. And I knew better. As if a simple business meant it wasn’t a serious business. And that’s a lie. And it’s an expensive one. Because complexity doesn’t cost you money to maintain. It costs you energy. Mental energy, creative energy, the kind of energy you actually need to do your best work and show up for the people you serve. And in midlife, energy is not a limited resource. We know that now in a way that we didn’t know it at 35.

Introducing the SOUL Framework

00:09:32

Lori: So what does fixing it actually look like? I’ve been working through this over the past year, and quite honestly, sometimes it’s been really uncomfortable. And what I kept coming back to was this. The businesses that actually work for us aren’t necessarily the biggest ones. They’re the ones built around four things. And I call it the SOUL framework. This one isn’t about adding more to your business. It’s about stripping back to what actually works. So the SOUL framework. S-O-U-L.

S: Simplicity

00:10:19

Lori: S is simplicity. Simplify your business, not your ambition. Your business. Fewer offers, fewer moving parts, fewer things demanding your attention. A simple business is not a small business. It’s a focused business. And focused businesses are almost always more profitable and infinitely more sustainable.

O: Optimize

00:10:46

Lori: O, optimize. Optimize your time. And here’s the key. Optimize it for you. Not for what somebody says you must do. Not for what the algorithm rewards. Not for what looks impressive in a mastermind. What actually works for your life, your energy, and plays to your strengths. If you hate video, stop forcing yourself to post a video every day. If you do your best thinking in the morning, protect your mornings. Optimize around the real you, not the version of you trying to keep up.

U: Uplevel

00:11:36

Lori: U. Uplevel. Do fewer things, but do them really, really well. Make your client experience so good that people talk about it. Make your content actually mean something instead of just filling a posting schedule. Make your offers so clear and so valuable that selling them feels very natural. Uplevel is not about doing more. It’s about doing less, better. That’s where the premium value lives.

L: Lifestyle

00:12:10

Lori: And the L of SOUL is lifestyle. Build a business that allows you to live your life guilt-free. Not someday, now. A lifestyle business isn’t code for a hobby business or a not serious business. It’s a business that was intentionally designed around the life you actually want. Slow mornings, if that matters to you. School pickups, if that matters to you. Whatever it is, the business should make that possible, not impossible.

The Energy Audit Exercise

00:13:10

Lori: So I want you to do something this week. And yes, grab that journal again. Because I want you to do an honest audit of your business. Not your financials, your energy. Draw a line down the middle of the page. On one side write, “energizes me,” and on the other side write, “drains me.” And go through everything you do in your business that you can think of. Every offer, every task, every type of client interaction. Put down clients’ names. Put down the ones that energize you and drain you, because we all have those.

Alignment Is a Decision

00:14:45

Lori: So here’s where I want you to land today. If you’ve been feeling that low-grade wrongness, that sense that something’s off even though you can’t fully explain it, I want you to know that that feeling is information. It’s not weakness. It’s not ingratitude. It’s your gut telling you that the business you’re running and the life you want to be living are out of alignment. And the good news, alignment’s not a personality trait you either have or you don’t. It’s a decision. It’s a series of decisions made over time with intention.
