01:30–02:49 | 300 Episodes Later and a New Season
So welcome to episode 301. I can’t believe I’m saying that. It feels like such a short time, but here we are. Three hundred episodes and a brand new name.
If you listened to episode 300, you know that The Encore Entrepreneur has officially evolved into the Midlife Business Academy. So yes, you’re in the right place.
Why? Because we’re different. We’ve grown just like every other business. We’ve expanded, changed, and morphed.
Over the last 300 episodes, I’ve seen patterns. I’ve seen habits that hold people back and moments that spark real momentum.
I’ve seen where we get stuck, not because we’re not capable, but because we’re trying to build businesses the same way we did 30 years ago, or the same way 30-year-olds are building them today.
But our lives are different.
Today I’m sharing my top 10 lessons from 300 episodes of coaching conversations, late-night realizations, and sleepless nights. These aren’t marketing trends or podcast hacks. These are truths I’ve lived and seen in my clients over and over again, especially in midlife.
So let’s jump right in.

02:50–04:06 | Lesson 1: Simplicity Wins
Lesson number one: simple wins.
My company’s incorporated name is Making Marketing Simple, so yes, I believe in simplicity. It’s one of the hardest lessons for us to embrace and learn.
Simplicity scales. Complexity stalls.
Simple doesn’t mean easy.
I’ve had clients come to me with three different websites, five offers, a podcast, a YouTube channel, and no clear message tying it all together. They’re working constantly, burned out, and making very little money.
It’s not because they’re doing the wrong things. It’s because they’re doing too many things.
Your audience wants you to make it simple. They want to know exactly what you offer, who it’s for, and how it helps them, in very simple language.
That’s it.
When we simplify, we free up our energy. We stop second-guessing ourselves and make space for momentum. Simplicity is the first step to sustainability.

04:06–05:29 | Lesson 2: Midlife Brings Clarity
Lesson number two: midlife can bring you clarity if you let it.
At this stage of life, we have lived experience. That gives us insight into what works and what doesn’t.
But here’s where we get stuck. We override that with “shoulds.”
I should launch a group program. I should do more reels. I should start a membership.
Clarity isn’t loud. It whispers. It nudges. It shows up as resistance, burnout, and dread.
When something feels heavy every time you think about it, it’s not resistance. It’s misalignment.
Midlife gives us permission to say, this doesn’t work for me anymore. And we need to listen to that.

05:29–07:37 | Lesson 3: You Can’t Out-Hustle a Misaligned Message
Lesson number three: you can’t out-hustle a misaligned message.
You can be the hardest worker in the room. You can show up everywhere. But if your message doesn’t connect, none of that effort matters.
I had a client, I’ll call her Sharon, a phenomenal health coach. She positioned herself as a weight loss expert because she thought that’s what people wanted.
Every time she talked about calories or workouts, her energy dropped. But when she talked about helping women feel confident in their own skin, she lit up.
We shifted her message, not her offer, and her business took off because her words finally resonated with her.
A clear, emotionally aligned message is the difference between “should” and magnetism.

07:54–10:20 | Lesson 4: Your Energy Leads the Business
Lesson number four: your energy leads the business.
You can have a perfect strategy, but if your energy is frazzled or resentful, people feel it.
In midlife, our energy is precious. We’re managing aging parents, kids leaving home, health changes, and identity shifts, yet we expect ourselves to function like we did in our thirties.
This lesson is about grace. About tuning in. About recognizing when to pause, not because you’re weak, but because you’re wise.
I’ve learned that I am the energy of my business. When I take care of myself, everything flows better.

10:25–11:54 | Lesson 5: Your Website Alone Won’t Save You
Lesson number five: your website alone won’t save you.
After years of running a website design agency, I’ve seen business owners think a new website will fix everything.
It won’t.
Your website is not the beginning of your strategy. It’s the expression of it.
If your message, offer, and audience aren’t clear, no amount of pretty design will fix that.
Start with what’s true in your business, then let your website reflect it.

11:56–13:05 | Lesson 6: Marketing Is Not One-Size-Fits-All
Lesson number six: marketing is not one-size-fits-all.
Most marketing advice isn’t made for midlife business owners.
We remember life before the internet. We want to know the why, not just the how.
There’s no universal formula. There’s only what fits your goals, your season of life, and your strengths.

13:05–14:34 | Lesson 7: Consistency Beats Brilliance
Lesson number seven: consistency beats brilliance every time.
You don’t have to be brilliant. You just have to be consistent.
Some of the episodes I thought were just okay turned out to be the ones listeners resonated with most.
Consistency builds trust, and trust builds everything else. You don’t need viral. You need visible.

14:40–15:58 | Lesson 8: People Are Watching
Lesson number eight: people are watching even when you don’t know they are.
Quiet followers often become your best clients.
They may not like or comment, but they’re listening. They’re paying attention.
Don’t stop showing up just because you don’t see immediate results.

16:02–17:41 | Lesson 9: Confidence Comes From Action
Lesson number nine: you can’t think your way into confidence.
Confidence doesn’t come before action. It comes because of action.
Stop getting ready to get ready. Start the podcast. Launch the offer. Raise the price.
Clarity comes through doing.

17:44–18:35 | Lesson 10: Midlife Is Your Superpower
Lesson number ten: midlife is your business superpower.
You’ve lived. You’ve learned. You’ve failed and pivoted.
That experience makes your voice valuable and your message magnetic.
Stop apologizing for your age. It’s not a liability. It’s your leverage.

18:40–21:27 | What’s Next, Homework, and Closing
This new season of the podcast builds on everything we’ve talked about today.
Your homework: pick one lesson and take one small action in the next 24 hours.
You don’t need a 90-day plan. You just need a first step.
Thank you for listening. This space is here for you. And remember, it’s never too late to build the business of your dreams.
